Fellowship Resources
The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies manages internal graduate fellowship competitions and can identify fellowship opportunities that fit your area of research or scholarship. Find links to UT internal fellowships on our page here and two hubs for external fellowships: Pivot, which is a searchable database that includes opportunities in government agencies and non-profit organizations, and GRAPES, which is a public database of grants, fellowships, and postdoctoral awards for graduate students that is maintained by UCLA.
If you are a first-year student in a STEM field (Chemistry; Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering; Engineering; Geosciences; Life Sciences; Materials Research; Mathematical Sciences; Physics & Astronomy; Psychology; and Social Sciences) and are U.S. citizen or permanent resident, we strongly encourage you to apply to the Graduate Research Fellowship Program run by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Application deadlines vary by discipline and range from October 19 to 23.
Graduate Career and Life Design
The Graduate Office of Career and Life Design (GOCLD) helps graduate students explore career options, identify internship opportunities, hone their teaching skills, develop professional skills, prepare application documents and more. Their career advisors understand the unique needs of graduate students and are available for individual appointments. GOCLD offers a variety of workshops and events; visit their website for their full schedule of events.

Map and Geospatial Collection Explorer Fellowship
This one-year $1,500 fellowship for UT students supports scholarly and creative projects that utilize or enhance UT Libraries’ map and geospatial data resources.

University Writing Center
The University Writing Center (UWC) offers weekly writing groups led by UWC graduate consultants. These meetings include accountability check-ins for writers to set goals and reflect on personal writing habits and progress on a project, followed by a period of quiet, sustained writing. Writing groups are open to all graduate students currently enrolled at UT Austin.
The UWC offers full-day writing retreats where graduate writers can focus on quiet, sustained writing in a supportive community. Retreats are twice a month and are free to all UT Austin graduate students.

Brumley Institute for Graduate Entrepreneurship
Startup Consulting Practicum
Work directly with Austin startups from our Accelerator Program on semester-long consulting projects alongside graduate students from disciplines including business, law, engineering, pharmacy, and the sciences.
Participants help startup founders tackle challenges related to:
- Market validation
- Competitive analysis
- Financial analysis
- Business model assessment

Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition & Search Fund Practicum
Entrepreneurship isn’t limited to starting a company from scratch. This practicum explores Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA), a growing career path focused on identifying, acquiring, and operating existing business. Through case studies, guest speakers, lectures, and hands-on exercises, students gain practical insights into business acquisition.

Office of Research Support & Compliance
The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) has recently launched a new self-paced training resource, Introduction to the IRB and Human Subjects Research. This is a great resource for graduate students to review before they begin research projects that may require IRB review.
The eCourse provides a foundational overview of:
- The purpose and role of the IRB
- Human subjects research regulations and ethical principles
- When IRB review is required
- The IRB submission process at UT
- Responsibilities of researchers working with human participants
The course is designed for students with little or no prior experience with human subjects research and takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
In addition to the eCourse, HRPP is offering live student workshops throughout the academic year and also maintains a variety of resources for researchers and research teams on their Education & Guidance website, including:

Longhorn Wellness Center
SHARE Communities are weekly student-led groups where peers with similar interests, concerns, or wellness goals can find community and social connection that goes beyond surface-level. They are places to step away from the grind and let down the mask, where mutual support, imperfection, and “real” conversations are the expectation rather than the exception. Any UT student may submit an interest form and attend any SHARE Community at any time of the semester.
Counselors in Academic Residence Program (CARE)
Shana Varnell is a licensed psychologist in the Counselors for Academic Residence (CARE) Program, a program that provides mental health services in academic offices to facilitate students' academic and life goals. Shana provides confidential mental health support for graduate and professional students. Her drop-in hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to noon, in the Flawn Academic Center (FAC) 2.264.
